With the help of his trusty basset hound Toby, Basil, Dawson, and Olivia track Ratigan through the streets of London to a seedy pub on the River Thames. They follow Fidget to Ratigan’s lair, where they are captured and trapped in a giant mousetrap. As Ratigan bids them goodbye so soon, he reveals his plans to use Hiram’s animatronic doll of Queen Mousetoria to assume the throne during the celebration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. US Theatrical Reissue: February 14, 1992 US Home Media Release: July 17, 1992 (VHS/LD); August 31, 1999 (VHS); July 23, 2002 (DVD/VHS); April 13, 2010 (DVD); October 9, 2012 (BR) Trivia: • Frames: 106,560 • Based on Eve Titus’s book, Basil of Baker Street. • The score was written by composer Henry Mancini, who also collaborated on two of the three featured songs with lyricists Larry Grossman and Ellen Fitzhugh; the third song, “Let Me Be Good to You,” was written and performed by Melissa Manchester. • After a four-year period of story development, animation took just over one year to complete. • A total of 125 artists were involved in making the film. • An innovative application of computer technology can be seen in the climactic scene where Basil faces Ratigan in a final confrontation inside the turning and thrashing gearworks of Big Ben. The 54 moving gears, winches, ratchets, beams, and pulleys were literally drawn by the computer, and created a unique background for the characters that had been animated in the usual way. • The film was re-released in theaters in 1992 under the title The Adventures of the Great Mouse Detective.
