When her aged and infirm father is called to war against the invading Huns, Mulan disguises herself as a man and joins the Chinese army in his place. Mulan’s family calls upon their ancestors to watch over Mulan, awakening the wisecracking guardian dragon, Mushu, to join Mulan on her quest. In the army camp, commanding officer Captain Shang vows “I’ll Make a Man Out of You” and trains Mulan and her cohorts to be skilled soldiers. When the regiment is called to duty, Mulan stops the Huns and is hailed a hero. However, her joy is short-lived when her secret is revealed. Abandoned by her regiment, Mulan heads to the Forbidden City. To save the city and China’s emperor, Mulan must show her former army buddies what it really means to be a man – or woman. Then, under the direction of production designer Hans Bacher, they found a unique look for the film, inspired by the simple graphic style of traditional Chinese art. • To create the 2,000 Hun soldiers for the Hun attack sequence, Disney developed a crowd simulation software called Attila, which allowed for thousands of unique characters to move autonomously. A variant of this program called Dynasty was used in the final battle sequence to create a crowd of 3,000 in the Forbidden City. • The three spots on the neck of Li Shang’s horse form a disguised Mickey Mouse.
