When the evil poacher Percival C. McLeach captures a young boy named Cody, a kangaroo mouse named Jake enlists the help of the International Rescue Aid Society. Bernard and Miss Bianca take on the case, traveling to Australia with the help of Wilbur and the Albatross Airlines. There they find McLeach hard at work trying to find Cody’s friend, the golden eagle Marahute. Miss Bianca, Bernard, and Jake traverse the Australian Outback, where their paths cross with Cody’s as he unknowingly leads McLeach to Marahute’s nest and the eagle’s eggs. With unwavering determination and strength of mind, Bernard and Miss Bianca are able to do what they do best: rescue those in dire need. CAPS is a computer-based production system used for digital ink, paint and compositing that allowed for more efficient and sophisticated post-production. The team that developed the process won a Scientific and Engineering Academy Award. • The production required a team of more than 415 artists and technicians. • Five key members of the creative team traveled to the Australian Outback to observe for themselves its unique beauty, which they wanted to capture on film. They came home with hundreds of photographs of Ayers Rock, Katherine Gorge, and Kakadu National Park, and countless filled sketchbooks. • The movements for the reptilian characters Frank and Joanna were modeled from a three-foot monitor lizard named “Little Dude,” who was often seen taking walks with a custom-made harness and leash. • Since Jim Jordan, who had voiced the albatross Orville in the original The Rescuers, had passed away, it was Roy E. Disney who suggested the character of Wilbur, Orville’s brother, as a replacement. The names, of course, were a play on the Wright Brothers.
